Not too long ago, repair was the first response to a broken or worn-out item, but mass production has since made it easier and cheaper to replace instead. Such affordability comes at a price. The preservation desire that came with owning our possessions has given way to a covetous appetite for the new. R for Repair presents a counterpoint to our modern consumerist culture, where repair is either deprecated or, ironically, deemed extravagant. Shifting the concept of repair away from mere restoration, the projects featured in this publication — ten repaired objects by Singaporean designers and nine useful repair solutions by Industrial Design students — reimagine repair as an inspiring activity that produces interesting outcomes.
